Like most pieces of legislation passed by Congress, there are often requirements included that are little known to most people. Sometimes, negotiated or even last minute provisions find their way into to a bill that seem to have very little to do with the objective of the legislation. No matter what side of the fence you are on with respect to Obama Care …maintain or repeal….it may surprise most people to learn that one of the provisions of the Affordable Care Act concerns providing consumers with nutrition facts. Although clearly nutrition has an important role to play in healthcare, it is not commonly known that the requirement for certain restaurants and eating establishments to display nutrition and calorie information is provided to consumers courtesy of the Affordable Care Act. It would be hard to argue that this type of transparency is beneficial and provides important information that does influence consumers to make better choices. I certainly have.
Although we can all agree that that the Affordable Care Act is not perfect and hold out hope that the promise to replace it with something better will come true, let’s also hope that the little known provision requiring nutrition and calorie disclosures remains intact so that we all have the information needed to make better choices.
